Why Social Anxiety Disorder?
Social Anxiety Disorder (SAD) is the fourth most common psychological disorder in the United States. It’s also a serious risk factor for the development of depression and substance use. SAD is a very painful condition where people have an intense fear of being scrutinized or judged negatively in social situations. People with SAD are often reserved, suffering in silence and therefore this problem doesn’t get as much attention and research funding as other less common conditions. While there are some effective treatments, a lot of people are still not helped and continue to suffer. This research will inform the development of more effective treatments among an understudied group.
